Hello everyone,
The Open is only a week away, and the big news this week is that Rory McIlroy has withdrawn from the competition. A kick about game of football with his friends has left Rory on crutches.
Rory has ruptured one of his ankle ligaments during a twist of the ankle joint; so not good, Nike Golf certainly won't be pleased, but perhaps Jordan Speith will benefit being right on Rory's tail to gain the number 1 spot. Speith will be playing for his third consecutive major victory.

A packed ball fitting day
Our latest became completely booked up on the day. A couple of people were annoyed at missing out on the free golf balls Henry was giving away (when you had a ball fitting but not without!) but not even a free ball fitting day pleases everybody I suppose. Reading your newsletters and booking in advance is highly recommended!
Anyway, plenty of players did learn something about ball technology and how it can improve your game. When you look at the outside of a golf ball, apart from the texture of the cover it is hard to appreciate what is inside and how they are different.
Some manufacturers take advantage of this and are still packaging two piece golf balls common in the 1990's! Not Bridgestone. The halves of golf balls (as pictured) allowed you to see how different types of balls are constructed, and it gave Bridgestone the opportunity to show how certain other brands are cheaper for a reason, still use outdated technology, are sold on price alone and simply for players who do not know better!Which is the Bridgestone?
In this day and age we can analyse your ball flight and spin rates, and prescribe better performing balls accordingly. If you hit the ball too high or low, or too much to the side, changing your ball can change your game. Come in and ask us about it.
Well done to Bridgestone Golf for making the effort. If you didn't know Bridgestone are number 2 in ball sales in the USA (after Titleist of course) and are also massive in Asia.
Junior Gathering - 19th July at 3.00 - join in!
Junior gatherings are about golfing fun for kids. All junior golfers and potential golfers are welcome to turn up and join in. This is the monthly FREE OF CHARGE event where children can turn up, bring friends and have a go. There is a putting competition, closest to the pin and the top five is set up as five par 3's. The children can play however many holes they feel like, parents are encouraged to attend.
Junior coaching - NEW
For various reasons, and lots of reasons the junior section has suffered in recent times. I think we need to rejuvenate it once more so I plan to get something started. So, in addition to the junior gatherings, I am going to start a new series of junior coaching sessions on Saturday mornings. These sessions will focus upon learning the game, and will serve as a pathway into golf for kids who are interested and want to take their game on to the next level. I am looking for a new wave of juniors to form a new junior section.
Coaching will take place on the practice ground, complete with new short game facility, and the first of six weekly sessions will take place on Saturday 25th July. This is outside of the Saturday football season, and places are limited so for further details and to register children/juniors contact the pro shop now or click here to send me an email.
Results - Jubilee Trophy
Derek Wilson had the best score of the day on Saturday in the first round of The Jubilee Trophy with a 79-12=67 and Paul Wheelton had the best score of Round 2 with a 68-4=64 reducing him to 2.7.
Paul Wheelton is also the current leader after Jubilee Round 1 and 2 with a 72 + 64 nett giving him a total of 136, 2 ahead of Curtis Brokenbrow who shot 68+70=138. There are many people still in with a chance this weekend. The draw has been done so please check the BRS for your tee time.
Entering The Jubilee
There have been a few problems with the computer refusing to accept entries from players who did not play in round 1 of The Jubilee. I am sure this technical error will be corrected in future competitions as the way we play The Jubilee is to encourage all players to enter any day(s) that you can, as there are always day prizes. This extremely flexible system is designed to encourage as much participation as possible. However, please note that although we operate an extremely flexible system, it does have limits;
This flexibility does not extend to players who have all missed the draw, and then want to put down together in an empty slot - there would be no point in having a draw. Such players can make up with any games that are left as 2's by contacting us in the shop and we can put you in. Neither does the flexibility extend to players, who enter on Saturday, and pay and commit to playing only on Saturday, and then change their mind later and want to enter on Sunday.
Wednesday Section Medal
The Wednesday Section Medal was played in tough conditions as shown by the scores; Division 1 was won by Chris Shaw with 80-9=71. Division 2 was won by Ross Paton with a nett 73 and Division 3 was won by Pete Simister JNR also with a 73 nett. Standard scratch went up to 73.
There were only 5 two's worth £10.60 each.
