3 Man Texas Scramble
Saturday's 3 Man Texas Scramble was played in pretty foul weather, and to be honest by about 4.00 (by which time over two thirds of the field had finished) the course was under water. Adam Stott, Mike Thompson and Ryan Swift took victory with a net score of 56. The scores were all rather close with third being 56.8.
Stablefords
Dave Hamilton wins again! After being reduced to 6 for the winter he scored 38 points in my Pro's Stableford on Sunday. Steve Austin finished second with 37 points, and Mark Watkins finished third on a card play-off with 36 points from Sam Jones.
Wednesday's Pro's Stableford was won by Pete McDonald with 37 points beating Curtis Brokenbrow on a card play-off. For the full results click here.
Just a Reminder
Captain's Drive-In is this Sunday at 1 pm, please come and support our new Captains.
OOM
With only one competition left Alan Finney and Paddy Weadick are still leading the OOM. It is very close at the top of the leaderboard, just a win or a couple of points in Saturday's cross country could decide our winner.
Guess the Year Revealed
Last week's 'guess the year' competition received many entries and some even offering to identify the players in the photo as well as the year. John Travis went for 1946 and identified one of the players as being our new President Graham Kennedy! Sorry John but not the right year. Guesses ranged from 1907 to 1963, and the only correct answer came from Colin Leigh within 5 minutes of the mail going out. The Correct Year for this Photo is …… 1957. Well done to Colin for getting it right. Colin also asked how many goes he could have and I think he wanted to send an email for every year, but no need Colin.
Colin wins a dozen Srixon AD333 balls!
Thank you to everyone that emailed in with an answer. I know this date because Reddish was featured in an edition of 'Cheshire Life' in October 1957 and there are quite a few pictures taken at the time, but only this one of the course.

16th hole
If you didn't already know, our 16th hole is the one that has changed the most since the course was originally constructed in 1912. In the late 1930's the original green was moved to the end of the peninsula where it is now, and par 3 became par 4. The hole was renamed 'Cottons' as Henry Cotton described the hole as 'the best looking, most fair and at the same time probably the most difficult hole I have ever played'. For more information follow the link to the history page of the club website which I wrote last year http://www.rvgc.co.uk/history.html
If you look at the old picture, the strategy of the hole in 1957 is clearer than what we see it today. The aspect to the right of the hole towards the green doesn't look that appealing for ones tee shot at all. The river (OOB), trees and narrowing fairway are right along your line, with a narrowing scrap of fairway to aim at. Compare this to the left side of the hole; there is nothing there. The safe, bail-out area is completely clear of trees so if you take the safe option, you have loads of space to aim at, but of course a longer second shot to a fairly narrow target waits, should you decide to go for it.
This picture also has a very interesting similarity to the picture of Alf Perry, George Duncan, Abe Mitchell and Alf Padgham which was discovered by chance at Hazel Grove golf club a couple of years ago. You will have heard of Alf Perry and perhaps one or two of the others, this is something I will expand upon a little in future weeks.

You may notice that I have updated the club website slightly, and that it has a different look. You will find the member's bookings tab at the top of the homepage. There will be some new pages appearing on there over the next few weeks, including a new member's page with details of entertainment in 2014. Many people don't have the correct accessories or just don't see them to use them. We now have every accessory you need to look after yourself and the golf course whilst playing. Take a look at our accessory wall.
Nick and his men have been working extremely hard and its showing with the pace of the greens and the quality of the course. We are getting really positive feedback from visiting parties. The fairways have been scarified this week. This will help them to be in superb condition for the weeks ahead.
