Good afternoon golfers,
We have been lucky so far this winter, and last winter too but the snow has found us now. Sledgers have been out in force so hopefully the snow will go as quickly as possible and so will they! The rumours that I sell them hot drinks are not true by the way!
On the other hand, my own children, Daniel and Katie, are delighted with the snow. School is closed and here is our front garden with no less than four snowmen.
Many people see a club they like the look of and just buy it without getting fitted for it. Every person has a unique swing, angle of attack and swing speed, by combining all of these aspects I can fit you correctly for clubs and you will find you hit them consistently and straighter. Golf is an enjoyable sport, so don't fight against clubs that just aren't fitted for you.
The new swing room will enhance your custom fitting experience immensely. Whether it's a driver, wedge or set of irons the data provided by the GC2 will ensure you buy the best for you and correctly fitted. If you are interested in having a custom fitting once the Swing Room is open, please get in touch here.
Talking about the Swing Room, there is light at the end of the tunnel and we are counting down to the opening of the new swing room upstairs in the clubhouse. Even when the course is covered in snow you will be able to play and practice in the warm and dry of the new facility.
I have not really bothered with all of the details of the renovation that has taken place, I will save the before and after pictures for when it is actually finished. Basically, enough room has been made to house the GC2 simulator by knocking three unused small rooms into one (as it was originally) which I could do myself quite easily.
Another task was to replace the floor; which sounds straightforward enough but don't forget this is a Victorian building so you never know what surprises you will find! Some of the better ones included some scorecards (the room was used as a locker room until the current one was built in the late 1960's), one showed the 16th as a par 3, a 10 shilling note, half a crown and this newspaper. And no; this isn't the date when we started this project by the way, but it will give you an idea how far we went! Perhaps this paper belonged to Frederick Scott who whose house the clubhouse was at this time, some 20 odd years before it was a golf course.
I wonder what he would have made of a GC2 simulator?
Titleist have improved their golf balls once more, and the latest generation of the 'king of golf balls' and the most played ball around the world is in your pro shop now. The 2015 Pro V1 and Pro V1x perform better than any previous ball in terms of both distance and short game control. Keep an eye out for an exclusive mail arriving in your inbox later today!
My feature in last week's newsletter about Abbie's future in golf, and what the PGA is and how it works, brought a flurry of emails so thank you. All the good wishes are very much appreciated and have been passed on. Abbie plans to begin her training in October which is the date of the next intake.
Some people did not know what the PGA was or realise that such a thing existed. PGA qualified professionals, such as myself, are those who have trained, studied, passed their exams and are qualified to run their own businesses as a Club Professional, train others and teach golf. The learning doesn't stop there though as the PGA organise numerous seminars and events to ensure a PGA members' knowledge remains at the cutting edge. I attend these regularly to maintain my status and keep my CPD points high! Some well-known players are PGA qualified professionals, such as Ian Poulter, who did their training to give them a better understanding of the game, and something to fall back on had they not made the grade as a player.
Best photo of 2015 - Thank you for numerous entries so far, please keep them coming. While the course is covered in snow, here is an entry I received last week that will remind you of what we can look forward to in the summer. Thank you to Tony Barnes who commented this could be in Florida.
Upcoming events - We are building a good reputation for open events with more and more players entering from various courses, but it is always great to have them supported by the members.
The Mixed Open is the first on the engender, which is on Sunday, 3 May. If you want to play but haven't sorted a partner out then please ask Dave Sanders who will happily find you a partner.
Last year's RV Open was a massive success and had the best turnout for a long time. We are hoping for even more this year so members will pay £10 per person and it will cost visitors £25 per person.
The Captain, Keith Seaton and Steve Bardsley won the ABC + 1 Stableford on Saturday with 68 points. The format was player A + another to count on the first; player B + 1 on the second and player C + 1 on the third and repeat. It is always a tough format when you are allocated specific holes, but the Captain had the game plan sussed beforehand. There were 11 two's worth £8.45 per team.
Paul Wade is the new leader of the Winter Order of Merit with 320 points! There are still plenty of comps to build you points up and get to the top of the leaderboard.
Sunday's Pro's Stableford was won by John Schofield with 38 points beating Alex Stones and Anthony Phillips on a countback. Paul Bruckshaw took fourth place on 36 points, with countback again needed to separate Paul and Simon Mulvey in fifth. There were 8 two's each worth £7.12 - all accounts have been credited. Unfortunately, Wednesday saw driving rain and high winds which meant that no comp was possible.
