Competition news

Hey Rose Bowl

Congratulations to John Devenney junior who is the first player to win a board comp this year. John’s 85-18=67 won by a single shot from Ryan Swift, Ade Ord and Harry Darby who all had net 68’s in Saturday’s Hey Rose bowl. Ryan Swift wins best gross with a score of 70. 2’s were worth £9.33 each.

140 people played making it the second largest entry (the largest being 142 a few years ago now) that we have had on a Saturday during my time at Reddish Vale. Despite the current restrictions I would say the club is buzzing!

 

Pro’s Stableford

Alan Baird has been making the most of some time to play more golf and Alan’s 42 points won Sunday’s stableford by a massive five points. For all voucher winners and 2’s click here.

 

Wednesday Section

Seems a while ago now but the timings of my newsletters have to be different at the moment so these are the results from last week which was the first medal of the year. Usually we expect the low handicappers to prosper in medal but last week this was not the case. Steve Burden’s 80-18=62 is definitely the best score of 2020 so far, and won division 3 by five shots. Rob Woolstencroft won division 2 with a net 68, and Phil Booth won division 1 with a net 70.

Today we had the third Wednesday section competition of the year, and the entry for all three events has been in three figures.

 

Restrictions easing

Most but not all suppliers in the golf trade have begun trading again, albeit on something of a reduced capacity, so I am able to order more products than before. One piece of kit that came in this week are these personal plastic rakes which attach to the end of a club and make the task of raking a bunker properly easier than doing it with your feet. I have green or blue ones in stock as seen in the photo.

If you missed the email from Alan this week I can tell you the club are operating a take-out service for the provision of beverages on competition days so you can enjoy a beer if you like?

Knockouts

Now that we can play in three and four balls we are once again taking entries for this year’s foursomes and Fourball knock out competitions. You can enter in The Pro Shop now so please select your partners and enter as soon as possible. If you do not have a partner and wish to play, please let us know so we can pair you up.

I am very pleased to have some staff back so I will be teaching again from tomorrow. You will see both Holly and Saskia back in the pro shop soon and we look forward to being able to welcome you into the shop again when the social distancing eases.

Hopefully, you’ve had the chance to enjoy the beautiful weather of late and get out on the golf course for a round of golf.

It starts with a UK Swing

Since our last newsletter, Rory McIlroy – the number one ranked golfer in the world – has said he “had a hunch” that September’s Ryder Cup will be postponed.

Whilst no decision has been made, the European Tour has confirmed it'll be returning 'behind closed doors' in July. The first event will be the British Masters at Close House; the first of six consecutive tournaments on British soil.

Who knows, maybe by the time the second UK Swing comes around in October – Dunhill Links, Scottish Open and BMW PGA Championship – things may look a little different.

Thoughts for the course

Chipping is a fine art. It requires precision and skill, both of which may need sharpening after a few months away from the golf course. No shame in that! So, here are a couple of points to remember.

Landing spots when chipping

Landing Spots

Don’t focus on the hole. Instead, pick out a spot – a patch of grass on the green – to land your ball on. Consider how the slope and speed of the green, the lie of the ball and the club you choose may affect where the ball finishes after landing.

Practise makes perfect

When on the chipping green, place a towel on your landing spot (as seen in the above image) and take aim. As you get the hang of it, you can fold the towel to give yourself a smaller, more challenging target to work with.
