Junior coaching

Junior coaching resumes this Sunday afternoon. I have always enjoyed teaching the juniors, they are full of enthusiasm and it is very rewarding to see them improve. We will be down on the practice ground this week.

Putting things right

Sometimes, it's the most obvious things that get overlooked. When it comes to golf, the club most used in a round is a putter so surely it's the part of the game that deserves most attention?

Club news

Return of the food van

Chris has resurrected the green food van which I can tell you is absolutely spotless and will be serving bacon or sausage barms from 8.30am tomorrow morning.

The green van is parked on the grass opposite the restaurant so it’s quite convenient to call there before you play or after five holes.

Congratulations to Andy Covell who wins our ‘marathon major’. Andy’s solid nett 68 in the final round was enough to win by a single shot.

Well done to all of the 21 players who played in all four rounds and returned a score in each.

This is my twelfth season at Reddish Vale and Chris’s 77-18 for a nett 59 is the lowest medal score I have seen.

When I asked Chris what was going through his head on those final few holes knowing he was going so well, he said that playing partners Tim Crampton and Neil Crewdson also knew how well he was doing and just kept the banter going which helped. Chris said he didn’t really feel the pressure thanks to his basketball and the pressure he has become used to in that. Chris added ‘I always take the last shots’. Well done Chris.

 

Malcolm Hamilton Trophy/Wednesday Section Day out

The ‘dynamic duo’ of Bob and Robert Little won the Malcolm Hamilton Trophy on Monday with a better ball score of 48 points.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the day out at Hopwood which, if you haven’t played it, is a lovely golf course well worth the half hour drive.

It’s always good to remember Malcolm whose passion for golf, sense of humour and positive vibes around Reddish Vale will never be forgotten.

As you can see this was a particularly low scoring day made possible by good weather and receptive greens.

Know your rules: Bunkers

Playing out of the sand is tricky enough without complicated rules getting in the way. Fortunately, golf’s hierarchy rewrote the rule book (literally) and from January this year we've been able to do a few things in the sand that we never could before.

So, what are these new-fangled rules and what do you still need to watch out for in order to avoid a penalty?

What you CAN do:

  • Touch or move loose impediments in a bunker (local rule previously)
  • Touch the sand with your hand away from the ball
  • Ground the club in the sand away from the ball as long as you're not testing the sand

What you CAN’T do:

  • Deliberately touch the sand to test its condition
  • Ground the club next to the ball when playing the shot
  • Touch the sand on a practice swing
  • Touch the sand when making your backswing

Hands up...

...if the only time you 'practice' your wedge play is when you hit a few shots at the start of your warm-up routine? Sadly, this isn't going to lead to a dialled in wedge game, which is one of the fastest ways to see your scores come tumbling down.

Know your wedges
1 club. 3 swings. 3 distances.


Sounds easy, right? Well, it could be but first there are two things you must do in order to start saving shots.

1. Correctly gapped wedge system - What we mean by this is having an equal gap between each club in your bag, so you're never left trying to 'manufacture' a shot on the golf course (this is where large numbers start). Callaway's Mack Daddy 4 wedges are perfect for exactly this reason, coming in a range of lofts from 46 (PW) to 64 (LW) degrees so you have every distance covered with your wedges.

2. Have 3 distances with each club - As per the graphic above, if you became comfortable with full, three-quarter and half swings with each of your wedges, you’ll find that your wedge play becomes seriously more effective.
