Good vibrations in golf? More players are using graphite shafts in irons. All woods and hybrids have had graphite shafts for years, they are generally lighter giving you more club head speed and distance, and being made of woven construction, and graphite dampens vibration more than steel giving a softer feel. Having a shoulder injury made me appreciate just how much difference graphite shafts make. For months, I could only play shots with graphite shafted irons because with a steel shafted club, I could feel the vibration at impact going straight through my shoulder joint. If you think about it, steel shafts have been around since they replaced hickory ones in the 1930’s. So the process of manufacturing them is old, so why would you still use them? Because they weigh more, and this weight has been what people have become used to. Modern graphite shafts are far more consistent than they used to be, they come in a greater range of weights including heavier graphite, and surprisingly they cost very little more than steel which was not the case a few years ago. For example, a PING iron with a graphite shaft, costs a mere £10 more than a PING iron with a steel shaft. The recoil shaft in the G410 is my club of choice at the moment. Several people have tried this new ‘SMAC WRAP’ shaft and ordered the irons because the feel is distinctly better. We do see certain players such as Brandt Snedeker using graphite in irons on the telly, but these are guys with very high club head speed not your average player. In recent years light weight steel has become far more popular in irons. Lots of steel shafts weigh about 90 grams each now compared to 120 grams in a traditional shaft such as True Temper Dynamic Gold. If you have any injury or ailment irritated by vibration? If you want a softer feel? If you want more club head speed and distance?
