All the previous week the juniors practiced playing match play. We taught them about things like gimmies and how not to give them, how it is different to stroke play and how to play the player using your shots wisely as we suspected that we would be receiving a few shots, which did turn out to be the case - and not just the golf course itself. Our team had a practice round at Dunham Forest on Tuesday as nobody had played the course before so I don’t think their preparation could have been any better.
The maximum handicap is 24 so we turned up on the day and discovered their handicaps to be 6,8,9,14 & 14 to our 8,24,24,24 and 24! Plus their average age was noticeably higher than ours.
Every match was very close but nobody could have predicted how close the match would end up. The first three matches went to the 18th after which we were leading 2-1 thanks to Luke Parkinson and Josh Beeby each delivering their point, so just one more point required for victory. Cole Parkinson halved his match so it went down the 19th which was also halved, so onto the 20th. |
