Club news

6 Weeks until the Golf Season

Spring is in the air! If you are one of the lucky people out playing golf this week you will know how good the conditions are. If you have been sheltering over the winter and haven’t played for a while I would urge you to dust those clubs off because the beginning of the golf season is only 6 weeks away, and there is much to look forward to.

Here are a few upcoming events to whet your golfing appetite:

The Final few events in the Winter Order of Merit – this year’s winter series of competitions have had the highest number of entries yet.

The Pro’s Cross Country – Saturday 30th March – Don’t miss this one! This event is the most diverse competition of the year as we always come up with some variations on the course to make it great fun, which will be made easier this year thanks to further tree removal.

Captain’s Drive In – Sunday 31st March – Dave Hamilton drives in as Captain, Linsy Warburton as Lady Captain and Daniel Myers as junior Captain.

Thank you to all the people who have donated golf balls, equipment and funding which is helping us develop the junior section of the club.

Special thanks to Harry Hinchcliffe who received so many golf balls from well-meaning fellow seniors taking part in the work party on Mondays that he has passed most of them onto us! No matter how bad you think they are we can use them so please bring them in.

The seniors work party must have been digging deep when they unearthed this 1.62 size Slazenger B51 with the traditional ‘atti’ dimple pattern!

Hole-in-One

Derek Wilson had hole in one at the 2nd during Tuesday’s seniors stableford.

I believe this is Derek’s fourth hole in one and this ace was achieved using the PING hybrid club that Derek is holding in the picture.

Derek didn’t see the ball go in the hole but Neil Crewdson did who said it struck the flagstick and did almost a 360 before dropping in.

Sunday work party

More daylight is appearing the left of the 16th where the Sunday work party have made great progress during the last few weeks. Greg Mitchell, Derek Simpkins, John Seaton, Lee Costello and Franc Brown are the most regular workers, apologies to whoever I have missed but the work is going very well.

Many of the silver birch which have grown in the last 30 or 40 years have now been removed. This will definitely improve the airflow on the 16th hole and it is hoped help with drainage.

Have a look at this picture of the 16th hole which I think was taken in the late 1950’s; as you can see there aren’t many trees to the left which is where the old green used to be.

Wednesday’s Pro’s Stableford

42 people played as Wednesday’s continue to be busy even in the winter.

Remember, my Pro’s stablefords are open to all categories of club member (but you must have a handicap) and are always full handicap stablefords played from the yellow tees. There were ten 2s on the day - which shows how good the greens are – and 17 holes were in play, just the 5th out while the work continues.

1st – Nick Devine – 39 points

3rd – Graham Sutherland – 37 points (CPO)
4th – Jon Milner – 37 points
5th – Frank Frost – 36 points (CPO)
