Greetings from Andrew Myers
Reddish Vale Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Ryder Cup

Only a week to go and The Ryder Cup will be underway, with 24 of the worlds' best players on show. We can look forward to some real attacking golf that match-play always brings. There are some big rivalries, lots of pressure and perhaps most of all pride is at stake. There is always a great atmosphere, and I'm sure the Scots will make their presence known, playing their bagpipes and waving their Union Jacks as always.

With the Ryder Cup back on home soil I think we have an excellent chance of retaining it. With the hindsight of Billy Horschel's fantastic win in the FedEx Cup I think team USA has made a mistake in leaving him, and Chris Kirk out of the team if current form is anything to go by. But it can only be good news for us!

The European clothing is always really smart and good quality, as Glenmuir designs and makes them each year. If you would like to own any Ryder Cup crested clothing, you can have a look at the options here www.glenmuir.com/about-us/ryder-cup/index.html. You can buy exactly what the players will be wearing on those days, you just can't see it yet so it would be a surprise!

And by the way, my prices are considerably less than buying direct from them!

As expected, Adam Stott won the Club Championship despite the best efforts of some members who were over generous buying him drinks at his 30th birthday party the night before. Adam carded a gross 68 and 69 to finish ten shots ahead of the runner-up who was his Dad Vaughan.

Mike Radcliffe has won the Seniors Trophy with a net total of 140; this also got Mike third in the Victory Trophy and back to category 1. David Ibbotson started well with a 66 on Saturday but just lacked the stamina to see it through on Sunday, scoring a 75 and having to make do with the runner-up position. David crossed the finish line just one stroke behind Mike.

In typical fashion this year we have yet another play-off, with both Vaughan Stott and Jamie Greig on 139 for the Victory Trophy. They are playing the play-off at 1.10pm on Saturday, so we won't know our winner until the Presentation that night. Good luck to both who need to bring their jackets and ties for the presentation at 6.00.

Simon Davenport won the day prize on Saturday with 77-12=65; this has got Simon down to 9, which was his target for this year. Simon has had some great scores recently, and I'm sure Simon will tell you the key to this has been playing and practising far more this year. I don't know how many shots Simon has played in the practise net this year but it will be in the thousands.

Dean Martin did not win a major last weekend, but still managed win Sunday's day prize with 70-3=67.

Prize Vouchers

This next presentation is tomorrow, Saturday 20th September at 6pm. Presentations are most entertaining and even if you haven't won a prize you do receive a free drink, so hope to see you there.

Here is the list of prize winners including those from last weekend. Take a look by (clicking here)as you may not realize that you have won a prize. And if you are scratching your head a little and struggling to understand why who has won what, this may help you; you can win an overall prize in all three competitions, but the day prizes are for players without overall prizes.

There are a few people with unclaimed vouchers at the moment. Maybe a few more than this time last year, which I think is due in part to the weather delaying a couple of the Majors and the subsequent presentation of the vouchers. Also this year's new system of all major competitions requiring a play-off to decide a winner in the event of a tie has resulted in lots of play-offs, which can delay proceedings further. For example we played the first round of The President's Prize on June 8th, and the vouchers were not presented until August 30th, almost three months later! Well done to those who collected their vouchers and managed to remember anything about their round. Click here to see those with unclaimed vouchers.

Anyway, I am sure that just as in previous years that these people will turn up and collect their vouchers as and when they choose to or can. By the end of the year these vouchers have virtually all gone. Please come in your jacket and tie to collect your vouchers from The Captain.

In Wednesday's Medal Lee Costello won Div 1 on a countback from Dean Martin both with nett 69's. Lee is definitely back on form and now down to 7.6. Dean is on a mission to reduce his handicap as much as possible and is using the handicaps of others as targets! Dean got lower than Ryan Swift last weekend and this net 69 has reduced Dean's handicap to 2. Dean insists he has not finished yet and has Phil Porkster Houghton (2.1) in his sights. Bill Coll won Div 2 with 78-12=68, but the score of the day came in Div 3 from Graham Sutherland who scored a majestic 86-20=66. I think it was Graham's new shoes that made the difference myself, the right fit and sprinkled with a little of the magic Pro Shop dust before they left the shop!

Are you wearing the right size shoes?

It's amazing how many people are wearing the wrong size shoes. The most common mistake is when people with wide feet go for shoes too long in length, to try and get the width. Graham Sutherland's new FootJoy's are a size 9.5 extra wide. Graham tried on a mixture of 9.5's and 10's but of course none of them were the correct fit. When we did establish the correct fit, Graham's new shoes were ordered from FootJoy and arrived the next day.

FootJoy not only make a large number of styles to choose from, but also a choice of widths. Make sure they fit! Try on shoes in your Pro Shop. You can look in the FootJoy brochure to choose a style, and see what widths are available in that shoe. I can check FootJoy's stock online at any time (so even on a Sunday) and if in stock; your new shoes will be delivered in one to two working days.

In a few weeks you will need shoes that keep your feet dry and have good spikes ready for the winter. If you can get another year out of the ones you've got, check the spikes are all present and in good condition. If they aren't bring them in and I will replace them.

PING G30 - Going Mad!

PING G30Sorry the PING stand was pretty empty for a few days but the G30 drivers and fairway woods have been disappearing. I am selling the G30 driver at £239 and the G30 fairways at £169 per club. Please do a price comparison. Your Pro Shop is £40 cheaper on the driver alone than a well-known local retailer, often perceived as cheaper! The PING stand has been replenished and there are demos to try.

Mike Oates has just invested in a new G30 driver. Mike tried both the standard G30 and the SF Tec model (which is slightly offset). Mike went for the SF Tec which has straightened his ball flight and added 20 yards to his drives in the process! Mike told me he has now buffered three rounds running for the first time in ages. Mike will tell you this is because he is hitting his drivers farther, and needing less-club to reach the green for his second shot.
