Charles Chevalier
Charles was the second Club Professional at Reddish Vale, and remains the longest serving Club Professional in the club’s history, a total of 18 years from 1923-1941.
At one time Charles held the world record for the most holes in one, a total of 31! I believe that Charles, who also had stints as Professional at Heaton Moor and Romiley Golf Club, played a lot of golf and used to practice hitting loads of balls to one of the par 3’s at Heaton Moor always looking to increase his tally of aces.
Two of Charles holes in one were recorded at Reddish Vale, one in 1925 and the other in 1926. The reason I have featured Charles this week is because I was delighted to find one of his hole in one trophies for sale on ebay!
This must have been Charles 25th hole in one because the golf ball on the trophy is printed with ‘Charles Chevalier’ and ’25 holes in one’. The plaque on the base reads ‘HOLE IN ONE 16th HOLE REDDISH VALE GOLF LINKS ACHIEVED BY C. CHEVALIER’. The trophy is silver and is hallmarked.
So this trophy dates from the days when the 16th was a par 3, as in the picture seen on the club bar cards. Of course I have bought the trophy and received it this week – a piece of history which has found its way back to Reddish Vale. The trophy is rather nice, stands at 5 inches tall and is on display in The Pro Shop.
If anyone has any interesting piece of history from the club such as pictures, equipment, scorecards, newspaper articles or anything then we would be most interested to see and share it.
