What gap?
Do you know the lofts of your pitching wedge and sand iron? Do you find that two clubs such as your 6 and 7 iron seem to go the same distance? Some clubs are stamped with their loft when new, and others are not. It is true that the average lofts on modern golf clubs are stronger i.e. less lofted than older ones, but many older sets are strong lofted too.
The modern pitching wedge is about 44 degrees of loft and a sand iron about 56. Between these wedges is the most common place to find a gap in your set. Only this week we measured a 25 year old set of irons and found the lofts to be just as strong as those above. In this case the player did not have a ‘gap’ wedge and had spent all that time compensating for a massive gap between these two clubs. You may just get used to dealing with the problem and not realize there is a simple solution.
How can I find out what lofts I am using?
Bring any irons into The Pro Shop and we will tell you. We have a loft and lie machine so we can measure your lofts in seconds and write down the figures for you. This is a FREE service which may help solve a puzzle. We can also adjust irons to different lofts, put them back to what they should be (lofts can change over time with general use, particularly on forged clubs) and make sure yours is a correctly spaced set.
