The most unusual of events...

Congratulations to Kevin McCrevey who holed in one at the 10th during Saturday’s Jubilee 3rd round. Albatrosses are very few and far between, most are 2’s on par 5’s like the one I had 20 odd years ago, but a hole in one on a par 4 is the most unusual event at Reddish Vale in many years.

Here’s how the events unfolded. Kevin hit a great drive down the 10th on the perfect line for the green and with just a touch of draw. After watching the drive, Kevin’s playing partners who were Colin Leigh and my son Daniel agreed that is was such a good shot it was probably on the green.

Meanwhile, the group in front of Vinny Costello, Geoff Loughlin and Pete McDermott were still playing the hole and were looking for a ball somewhere back right of the green. Geoff Loughlin checked the hole on his way past it as you do, but as usual the hole was empty. I don’t know if they found the ball but when play resumed and they returned to the hole, to their surprise there was a ball in it. ‘Where did that come from?’

When was this?

Derek Wilson told me about the last known hole in one Albatross at The Vale. Derek was playing the 16th hole during a match with the ‘long hitting’ late Mike Batty. Derek said Mike played a good drive and when they got down to the green no sign of the ball.

Derek recalled a bunker which used to be short right of the green (the river has claimed it in the years since) and after the ball was not in there Derek said ‘go and look in the hole’. Mike himself walked up to the hole and there it was. Derek can’t remember exactly when it happened, but estimates 35 years ago in about 1983. The right hand bunker being there may offer a clue.

Pro’s Prize to Ladies

Fiona Andrew’s 37 points won this year’s Pro’s Prize to the ladies by a single shot from Sheila Cowlard, so the scoring was good.
