18th hole comparison Anyway, let’s talk about the 18th hole at Augusta. Being the 18th it has been the scene of plenty of drama and close finishes over the years; Sandy Lyle hitting his one iron into the first of the left hand bunkers, before holing that down hiller to win back in 1988 is one for me. The events which have taken place there are far more memorable than the hole itself, but did you know that the 18th at Augusta has a similar increase in elevation from the tee to the green as the 18th at Reddish Vale? It is difficult to appreciate this for a number of reasons; the cameras can never show the slopes accurately on the television, the rise from tee to green at Augusta begins from the front of the tee, and their 18th is now 465 yards compared to our 353 yards, so the incline is much more gradual. Nobody ever comments upon the ‘hill’ on the 18th at Augusta. We can definitely say that our 18th is also memorable, but for one reason only. 200 yards as flat as a pancake, then 150 yards up the slope which never ceases to provoke comment after comment. We have 17 excellent holes, and yet it tends to be the other one, especially with it being the last which sticks in the mind. |
