Do modern irons hit the ball further?
Yes they do but their lofts are forever getting stronger, so they will do. A modern day pitching wedge can be as strong as 42 degrees in loft, whereas a few years ago you would expect a pitching wedge to be around 48, and of course you still need the same loft on a sand iron that you always did, which is around 56 degrees.
So, it’s great hitting a seven iron that much further, but it can leave some very big gaps between wedges. Four to five degree increments are about right between wedges so if your wedge is 42, and your sand iron 56 you have not one but two wedges missing – a single ‘gap wedge’ will no longer cover it.
If you don’t know your lofts, or your yardages or feel that there is something missing we can help you. We can measure the lofts on your wedges. We can do a gapping session in the swing studio, so you learn your distances and spot gaps in between clubs.
We have loads of wedges in for the start of the season. We have the Vokey SM7’s and the Callaway Mackdaddy 4. Receive a FREE FITTING AND GAPPING SESSION with any two Callaway or Titleist wedges you buy. |
