Welcome back to the weekly newsletter. This week have a full report from this year's KO's, our ever popular 4 for 3 on lessons is still here for winter, this year's best irons are revealed, and we have our usual competition roundup. Enjoy the read!

 
Club news

Knockout winners 2017

The final of the seniors knockout was played on Wednesday and concluded this year’s knockouts so here is a quick round-up:

  • Singles - Winner Tony Barnes, Runner-Up Paul Bruckshaw
  • Foursomes (pictured) – Winners – Derek Simpkins and Simon Mulvey, Runners-Up Dean Martin and Ryan Swift.
  • Fourball – Winners – Barry Hammond and Ian Mottershead, Runners-Up Colin Farrow and John Northrop
  • Seniors (pictured) – Winner - Brian Fitsimmons, Runner-Up - Neil Crewdson
  • Mixed – Winners – Tony Barnes and Jeanette Kinder, Runners-Up Graham and Linsy Warburton

Tony and Jeanette went on to play in the Cheshire Mixed Foursomes at Vale Royal Abbey Golf Club on October 8th, they were one of three pairs scoring 38 points but unfortunately finished third on countback.

Course news

Winter mats

Love or loathe them, ‘fairway’ mats are now optional on the fairway and also in the first cut of rough. So you can choose, and in lots of areas this will definitely be an advantage so you may want to dig yours out before the weekend, if not we have them in stock. Ours are the same as Andy Hart’s which has served him well for the last 25 years (and the rest!) so they aren’t bad.

 

Caution golfers

Several people have slipped and fallen recently as some of the slopes on the course are wet and slippery. Cleats are adequate in summer, but in truth we don’t get the weather of the American courses from where cleats originated. Metal spikes work much better for the ground conditions of the British winter - as they don’t become clogged like a cleat. They are safer and will also grip better every time you play a shot; bring your shoes into the Pro Shop and we will swap them over for you.

Seniors

The Seniors played at Chorlton golf club last week for the new Mel Clarke Trophy. The trophy was in memory of Mel and was bought from contributions from his many friends at the golf club.

The first winner was Mike Short with 40 points a magnificent score (in terrible weather, extremely wet!). Mrs Clarke joined us for a meal and presented the main prize to Mike.

Titleist
Take dead aim

We've spoken a lot in recent weeks about Titleist's brilliant 718 irons that were launched at the beginning of the month, but now it's time for us to talk a bit about their new 818 hybrids.

As you can see in the photos below, there are two different hybrids in the H1 and H2. Whilst the H1 is the larger of the two and perfect for those golfers who sweep the ball off the ground, the H2 is for the steeper golfer who prefers a more iron-like look.
