Where’s this? Last week I talked about some of the great players who played here in the 1920s, 30s and 40s - and here is another example. Back in 1940, Henry Cotton took on Richard Burton in a 36 hole ‘Red Cross’ match around Reddish Vale - Richard Burton was the current Open Champion at the time having won the title at St Andrews in 1939. Incidentally, Richard Burton holds the record for holding The Open title for the longest, seven years in total due to the outbreak of WW2 and The Open not being played again until 1946. Henry Cotton’s performance was described as a ‘sparkling display’ as he beat Richard Burton 8 & 6. The picture below was taken on the day of the match. As you can see the match drew large crowds, but can you identify where this photograph was taken? Please submit your answers by email. The first and fifth correct answer will each win half an hours use of the swing studio. |
