Golf ball fitting

Joe Senior (PGA Professional) has been working as a professional ball fitter for four years now. We were delighted that Saturday's ball fitting day was such a success and the feedback I had from those fitted was extremely positive. Basically, those who were fitted played shots with a driver into the practice net under the watchful eye of a launch monitor. The launch monitor measured both swing and ball speed off the clubface, and photographed the initial ball flight. From this data the most beneficial type of ball for that player in terms of driving distance and accuracy could be established.

Oh sorry, forgot to mention in advance that all those who were fitted received free golf balls! Well done to all those who booked themselves in.

Compressions and swing speeds

Swing speed is important as it determines how much you compress the ball at impact, and it is the core of the ball which transmits energy on the longer shots. Bridgestone believe that too many club golfers are using balls with too higher compression for their swing speed, don't compress the core enough and lose performance as a result. This is what led Bridgestone to develop the B330 RXS which is like no other ball on the market. This is a low compression core with a soft outer shell. What it means is that all those players with a swing speed between 95 and 104 mph (about average) can further compress the core of this ball more when struck. The ball spends longer on the clubface for improved feel and will travel further. The soft shell ensures the feel and spin around the green when the core isn't compressed.

Bridgestone are pioneers in ball design, and even way back in 1995 when Nick Faldo won The Masters in that showdown with Greg Norman, he was using a four piece Bridgestone ball way ahead of its time. Come and ask me which one is best for you and put them to the test.

Abbie

County match week at Gosforth Park is going well for both Abbie and Cheshire. Despite a narrow defeat to Yorkshire on Monday, Cheshire achieved fantastic victories over most notably Lancashire on Tuesday, Cumbria (9-0) on Wednesday and Durham (7.5 - 1.5) on Thursday. With Lancashire then beating Yorkshire there is everything left to play for with one match to go.

Abbie is a very determined match player and quite simply hates losing! Abbie's most notable victory so far this week was against the Durham county champion on Thursday.

Abbie will be back next week so my lesson diary will resume as normal. Anyone thinking about booking lessons and improving your game DO IT! Golf lessons work and get results. And there aren't many better adverts for my coaching than Abbie Cowlard.

Major winner

'Lee Costello' will be written in gold on the board for the Hey Rose Bowl. Lee had been struggling with his game for a while, not playing as much and gradually Lee's handicap had increased from 7 to 11. The last couple of times Lee came into the shop before his game on a Saturday, he was telling me that he thought the problem was his grip which had become stronger, and he was aiming more and more to the right to compensate for it. Anyway, Lee has held a training grip a couple of times and reminded himself where it should be.

Things must have really slotted back into place on Saturday as Lee's 75-11=64 is the lowest winning score I can remember for a while and enough to win by 3 shots. I'm very pleased for Lee and hopefully this is the turning point toward coming back down again.

Graham Davies finished second with a net 67 and this has brought Graham to within a couple of shots of achieving his long term goal of a single figure handicap.

A match?

Date; Friday 25th July
Time; 15.00hrs

Format; One-off singles match taking place over 18 holes for the sum of £100 cash. In the event of a tie, the match shall be resolved by virtue of sudden death play-off, over holes 6 and 18 until resolved.

Conundrum

The old, overweight, semi-crippled Secretary/Manager Dave Sanders has been challenged to a match by the young, virile and extremely fit young green keeper Justin.

Despite Justin having played off a lower handicap than Dave, Dave has generously conceded this would be advantage and offered to play Justin off scratch. In response, Justin has pointed out that Dave does well for golfing days out and also Dave's tally of holes in one far outweighs his.

Spectators are encouraged to attend the match from the start until the conclusion of play, when there will be numerous drinks in the clubhouse. May the best man win!

Titleist Vokey SM5 wedges

From deep greenside rough, use your bunker technique. Move the ball forward in your stance, open the face and keep your torso rotating to the finish. The new grooves in Titleist’s Vokey SM5 wedges will help too; tests show they increase backspin by up to 500rpm from long grass.

Take advantage of our expertise

It’s easy to trial a friend’s driver when your form with the woods dips. And whilst you might stumble across better results, long term it’s not the answer. With our expertise we can determine the proper loft and shaft flex that will suit your swing and, ultimately, save you shots.
