The truth about loft

Cobra were clever a few years ago when they manufactured some of their drivers and I will tell you how; they realised there was a ‘macho’ man thing about using less lofted drivers than your mates. They also knew that in reality, most golfers’ average shots would be far better with more lofted heads.

So they made 12 degree drivers and stamped 9 degrees on them! Everyone’s a winner! Cobra got around the legal bit by saying they were stamping the dynamic loft (that at impact) rather than the static loft (that at address) on the heads!! They were doing golfers a big favour, although the players didn’t know it. (The company has changed hands since then I should mention).

Cobra sold loads of the things which really highlighted how more loft helped. They performed great - it was easier to get the ball in the air, with less sidespin and hence straighter drives – and the golfers were happy because they thought they were using a 9 degree club. Having the correct launch angle and keeping the spin rate down is the key to longer, straighter drives.

Junior golf

Junior update

Expect to see juniors out on the golf course. This week we have had a regular three or four-ball and one day we had two three balls. All six players have handicaps and Callum Smith has reduced his from 54 to 36 in two weeks! The group includes my son Daniel and I think it’s fair to say they have ‘got the bug’ in a big way.

The pathway into golf is as follows:

Register children in The Pro Shop for junior coaching on Sundays. Abbie runs two classes, the beginners class is normally from 2 until 3 o’clock, this Sunday it is from 3 o’clock.

Regular attendance and good performance will be rewarded by an invitation to the intermediate class, where they meet other juniors already experienced on the golf course. At this stage juniors may be given the opportunity to join Reddish Vale.

Once juniors are playing golf together on the golf course, achieve a handicap, and are on that mission to reduce it, we are succeeding. Following the stepping stones we have put in place will make things better for everyone.
