Competition news

2 For 3 Team Stableford

Only one point separated the first six teams on Saturday, with John Northrop, Tim Crampton and Anthony Phillips claiming victory. Brian Fitzsimmons (and playing partners Paul Mumford and Geoff Loughlin) rued a couple of missed putts on the final green (one with the back of the putter!) that might well have made all the difference but never mind Brian it's 'only a game'.

Sunday Stableford

The weather was pretty foul so a lower entry than normal, but Adie Ord managed to claim victory with an impressive 40 points.

Wednesday Stableford

Tom Walker played the 'best round of his life', in Tom's words, to win the stableford with 43 points. Thank you for an excellent entry this week and we have a further three Pro's stablefords before the first Wednesday Section event from the white tees on April 5th.

New Callaway Iron

The new Callaway Steelhead XR Pro irons arrived this week and as you can see, they look fantastic. This is the slightly slimmer with less offset version of the Steelhead XR which have caused players to be stunned and totally bemused by how far they go! The demos are in now (right and left handed) and there is a myriad of shaft options you can try.

Assistants news

Abbie at The Belfry

Abbie has been at The Belfry this week (headquarters of the PGA) completing her second year training course. It is a bit like going back to school really, except it's all about golf and a little more advanced. Abbie has been tested in her club building/repair skills (of which she has had a lot of practice at repairing them here at Reddish Vale). Abbie said she felt as if things had gone well and she managed to build a club from components to the right spec, including swing weighting it and adjusting to the correct loft and lie with ease. Abbie was the first student to finish the three tasks set.

I am also very pleased to say that Abbie's back has been better recently and Abbie has managed to hit a few balls - and so far so good.

Course news

Despite The Weather

Although wet in parts, the course is recovering well from the recent deluge and much good work has been taking place. After investing in a new flail recently, the machine has been put to good use and you can see this once untidy area of scrub and bramble etc behind the 6th green that has been cleared. Mike seems to enjoy using the flail and has cleared large areas quickly, another being the left side of the 13th.

Here you can see Justin verti draining some of the wettest areas on the course, the tines break through the surface and layers beneath, allowing the air to reach into the ground. The first picture is of the right of the 1st fairway.

Two separate work parties of volunteers have also been doing their bit to clear areas of unwanted growth, this week on the bank behind the 6th tee. Phil Reeves' group of seniors go out every Monday morning and anyone else who wants to turn up and join in is most welcome.

Important news

River Incident - Serious

On Tuesday this week we had an unexpected arrival of three fire engines, two ambulances and umpteen police cars within minutes. Unbeknown to us, a lady walking her dog had somehow fallen in the river to the left of the 14th hole ('Brinni Beach' area on the other side of the river) and was swept away. As I understand it, a child who was with the woman shouted to some of our seniors who were playing the 14th at the time, so thanks to David Bennett who called the emergency services.

Nobody knew the whereabouts of the woman for a while, so it was a great relief to hear she was rescued alive from the weir near the big Tesco's where the river took her. The river was pretty swollen at the time, must have been very cold and this should be a warning to everybody else not to take any risks where the river is concerned.

Important news

Modernising Golf's Rules

Last week the R&A proposed some key changes to the Rules of Golf from 2019. Their Rules Modernisation initiative has been underway for a few years now and this is the next stage in that process. The aim is to not only make the Rules easier to understand, but also to address some of the game's current problems, such as speed of play, and ensure they fit the needs of today's game.

Please spare a couple of minutes to complete our survey, which gives you the chance to have your say on the proposed changes.

We've picked out some of the most significant Rules changes for you to digest in this survey, before giving you the chance to say whether you agree or disagree with each of them. It'll be great to know your thoughts.

Have your say here.
