Recently we have had a surge of fitting sessions for new irons that have taken place in the swing studio.
All you need to bring is your current 7 iron.
You hit shots tracked with the GC2 and the computer keeps a record of every shot. You can try a truly massive selection of Callaway, Titleist and PING irons and compare their stats to those of your own club.
The average distance, side spin, and number of yards offline, provide some of the most crucial data when iron fitting. If you notice a significant improvement, we can order your new clubs custom made from the manufacturer.
This week we fitted one person who couldn't believe the difference when he tried the new Callaway Steelhead iron.
We improved upon their 7 iron stats very easily, and the Callaway was better still and I quote 'it felt like getting a flyer with every shot'. The ball went 10 yards further.
Here is a core of earth taken from the first section of the 8th fairway yesterday- the wet area on the right. It is interesting because it illustrates the reason of why the golf course is wetter in parts than it has been in the past.
If you examine the core you will see that below the grass on the surface, there is a layer of about an inch and a half of thatch. It takes a long time for this amount of thatch to develop, and below the thatch you can see a darker coloured section.
This darker layer of black sludge does not let water through. A wetter climate does not help but once this process has begun it only gets worse.
The way to rectify this problem and improve the drainage is to verti-drain the fairways more often and spike through the dark layer of sludge. This process begann this week as Nick has hired an 'earthquake' machine which does exactly this. The core is on display in the Pro Shop.
Junior Coaching
It has been great to coach the Junior Section these past few months and it is so good to see so many of them enthusiastic about golf. With the weather changing we are now going to run coaching once a month indoors in the Function Room, where they can enjoy golf in the warmth. We haven't set a date yet but we will let you know as soon as possible, so please bring your children/grandchildren along. Everyone is welcome. We have a lot of talent in our Junior Section so hopefully next year we can set up some Junior Competitions on the course for them to enjoy.
