Pre-1912 Postcard

Thank you for the huge response to last week's competition to name the location of the old postcard, it is reassuring to know that so many of you read the newsletter.

Some people thought this was the 14th, a few thought it was the practice ground (I can see what you mean by the shape of the river) and 20 people submitted the correct answer that the picture is looking over the 8th tee from the other side of the river, and directly along what is now our 8th hole. Click on the image here to enlarge it.

Porkster Houghton was the first to respond with the correct answer so well done to Phil who wins half an hour's use of the swing studio.

Phil said that he remembers the barn that used to be to the left of the 8th green (which the 8th hole is named after) and it was the appearance of this which instantly placed the photo for him. Several other people commented on the barn and remember how close to the green it was, and how much it came into play. Graham Warburton remembers shots bouncing off it and finishing on the green. Barry Swainson remembered how dangerous the barn was, and I think it was during one of Barry's two terms as captain that the barn was removed.

Thank you to Duncan Cheslett who sent me a part of an ordnance survey map of the area in 1907. The farm buildings there were the only buildings in the area at the time, so here is a photo of Duncan's map, complete with arrow showing exactly where the above picture is looking.

The thing which made me recognise the location is the bank some 100 yards in front of the 8th tee. If you look carefully at the old picture above, you can see paths in the bank, they go diagonally from left to right. I don't know if this was years of a horse and cart going across the bank to reduce the gradient, but the exact same paths are still visible today.

It isn't possible to take an unobstructed view from the exact same place today, as the area has become so overgrown by trees. In fact the trees completely obscure the view of the river to the left of the hole, the farm, the cottage and all. Anyway, here is a picture of the 8th hole as we know it for you to compare. Because the response to this was so good we will have a second, identical prize drawn at random from the other 19 correct responses. Well done to Brian Fitzsimmons whose name was drawn out.

Swing studio

The two prize winners have half an hour to spend playing golf in the studio. The GC2 system is the market leader and proven to be 100% accurate. The studio has transformed my diary, especially during the winter months or whenever the weather is bad.

You can play golf in there too

Abbie or myself will show you how it works (it's very simple) and you can be in there learning and practising. Only a few days ago, a regular player used the studio and discovered that his swing path was exactly the opposite to what he thought it was, so previously he had been practising exactly the wrong thing, compounding his errors. The GC2 enlightened him and progress was instant.

If you would like a professional eye cast over your swing then get in touch here.

Competition results

Well done to Colin Barr who must be our golfer of the week. Colin scored a hole-in-one at the 4th in the Seniors match vs Buxton High Peak on Tuesday, using the rescue he is holding in this photo. So their opponents '2' at the 4th wasn't good enough, and the hole and match were both won.

Wednesday Section Chairman's Prize

On Wednesday there were no hole-in-ones, but Colin did win the coveted Wednesday Section Chairman's Prize with a nett 67. Not a bad couple of days, and Colin also submitted a correct response to our postcard quiz, albeit at the third attempt. Steve Bardsley finished second in the Chairman's Prize with a nett 69, beating John Schofield and Stuart Wilde on countback.

There were 13 twos, each worth £5.30. We had five nearest the pins with holes and winners as follows:

  • 4th - Don Roberts - Sponsored by the pro
  • 6th - Gareth Jones - Sponsored by the captain
  • 9th - Steven Smith - Sponsored by the chairman
  • 12th - Lee Norcross - Sponsored by the chairman
  • In 2 on 16th - Steve Bardsley - Sponsored by the captain

President's Weekend

The conditions were tough at weekend with the wind really picking up. Our overall winner is still to be decided as Robert Little and Stewart Flint finished the weekend with 67 points, meaning a play-off will take place to determine our winner. David Pilling secured third place, his 66 points pipping Nick Carroll's on countback. Round one's winner was Duncan Hayes with 39 points, two ahead of Steve Smith in second with Peter Watson one shot further back in third (CPO). 38 points was the winning score in round two, Phil Harrison beating Dave Hamilton on countback. Third place went to Chris Connolly with 37 points.
