Hello golfer,

In this week's newsletter we review the ongoing course work happening at Reddish Vale, we look ahead to a busy Easter period, plus we set you a challenge. Enjoy the read.

Photo of the week

Recognise any of these?

You should as most of them are still here. No moustaches have been photo shopped on, I believe they were real.

Steve McCann brought this photo to the club last weekend which shows the Reddish Vale foursomes team of 1994.

See who you can make out - click on the image to enlarge it. If you need help, see below.

Top row, L-R - Alex Smith, Frank Dolan, Barry McConnell, Eddie Burke, Brian Boakes, Andy Hart, Vaughan Stott, John Andrews and Bob Kelsall (Vice Captain). Bottom row, L-R - Steve McCann (Captain), Graham Kennedy, Kevin Gale, Malcolm Storie, Porkster Houghton, John Seaton and Phil Fallon.

Course news

The new 2nd tee and the new much larger 4th tee have both been laser graded. Laser grading levels the tees extremely precisely, but with a slight fall at the edges so that water runs off. Both tees have then been re-turfed as you can see in the photos below. And wow, suddenly they look so much better than bare earth. It will take some time for the tees to settle, but Nick tells me the new turf elsewhere, such as around the new bunkers on the 3rd, has knitted really well, including the bank on the left of the green.

As you can see below, the new bunkers at the 3rd now contain sand, and the new bunkers at the left of the 4th not only look miles better, but will play and drain far better too.

And take a look at the new bunker at the back left of the 4th; as you can see the new bunker has more shape and rather than the lip of the bunker being straight in line with the edge of the green, this bunker has a lip that deviates into the bunker slightly. These 'arms' or 'noses' that protrude into the bunkers, and the 'bays' that result on either side, are synonymous with Alister MacKenzie design. I am certain that the shape of the original bunkers on Reddish Vale would have more resembled the new bunker at the back of the 4th. Over the years these 'arms' or 'noses', as they are known, are often chopped off as they become eroded and are difficult to maintain. What an excellent job of making a new bunker this is.

The 3rd and 4th are still closed at the moment, but massive progress is being made and I am sure they will be open again, and better than ever, before too long.

Shop news

As always the shop is absolutely rammed with new stock in time for the new season. Too much to list has arrived, here are just a few to whet your appetite:

Titleist stand and cart bags
PowaKaddy lithium trolleys
Motocaddy trolleys, accessories and cart bags
FootJoy FreeStyle shoes (pictured below)
Titleist accessories
Replenishment PING G stock
Stromberg trousers

Vokey SM6 wedges - We have 24 in the shop at the moment (pictured above). The most played wedge on Tour just got better and they look brilliant. Please come into the pro shop and talk to us about your wedge requirements. If you have a gap in your set we will find it and fill it. We are interested to know what shots you want a wedge for, and we will explain about sole design, bounce angle etc and make sure you get the right one for the job.

Upcoming events

Sat 26 Mar - Pro's Cross Country - As always, this will be very different to what you play most weeks. We will be designing the course and making the scorecards in the next few days, so read next week's letter for a sneak preview. Saturday entries have been very high recently, and this will be the final event in the Winter OOM so book as early as possible.

Sun 27 Mar - Captains' Drive-In - Come along and see Tony Barnes drive-in as Captain, and Jeanette Kinder drive in as Lady Captain. The drive-in is at 1pm followed by a four player team competition with a shotgun start at 1.30pm. The list is in the corridor by the table storage room.

The drive-in is certainly the main event of the day, but there will be a Running Stableford played over the Sunday (latest tee time 9am to leave course clear for the drive-in at 1pm) and all day on Bank Holiday Monday.

Club news

Congratulations to Jeanette Kinder who last night was made the Lady Captain. Here is a picture of the Lady Captain teeing off the 14th with Past Lady Captain, on their way to victory in the Daily Mail Foursomes.

This Saturday, 19 March will be Alan Duffy's final Presentation as Captain. Come and support the Captain who has done a great job this year, and of course you shall receive a FREE pint whether you have won a prize or not. If you have won a voucher, please turn up in your jacket and tie. Click here to see the voucher list.

Competition results

Sat 12 Mar - Adam Stott, Keith Pownall and Steve McCann won Saturday's 3 Man Texas Scramble with 47.7, collectively they scored a massive 10-under-gross through 15 holes which is exceptionally good. Second were Dave Hamilton, Craig Davies and Lee Addison with 47.9 and third were Ryan Jackson, Ian Cowlard and Phil Houghton with 48.0. All the scores were very close this week. There are only two order of merit comps left, but it is still very close at the top of the leaderboard, so make sure you enter on the BRS and get some good bandits in your team.

Sun 13 Mar - Sunday's Pro's Stableford was won by Paul Donohue with 34 points, one ahead of Paul Bruckshaw. Third was Kevin McCrevey with 32 points beating Andy Mackenzie and Adie Ord on a card play-off. There were only three twos, each worth £15.66. Click here to see the full results.

Wed 16 Mar - Andy Young won my Stableford on Wednesday with a massive 36 points, Don Roberts was second with 33 points and Tim Crampton was third with 31 points. Prizes went down to 5th this week. The cards have been checked twice and surprisingly, out of 42 entrants, there were no twos on Wednesday which means a double rollover next week - a pot of £51 is there to be won already.
